Since 2007, High River has stood in as the fictional community of Hudson on the hit CBC family drama, Heartland. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the foothills of southern Alberta, close to the Rockies and Kananaskis Country, Heartland is regularly filmed in various places around High River, on nearby private-property locations, and on a sound studio just up the highway in the city of Calgary. On LocationHeartland is primarily filmed at four locations; 1) The ranch, where the exterior of the house, barn, gate, paddock and jumping course are; 2) The dude ranch; 3) The town of High River, Alberta, which doubles for Hudson and where Maggie's Diner is; and 4) A studio in Calgary, where the interiors of the barn, vet clinic and ranch house are filmed. There are also special locations in the Calgary/ Millarville/High River area that are unique to each episode. Other films and television series have been shot in High River, too, such as Fargo, Joe Picket, Superman 3, and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. Amy's graduation ceremony was filmed at George Lane Park, just down the street from Maggie's in the infamous red gazebo! There is a campground located in George Lane Park, open from May 1 to September 30th as well! Across from the historic Wales theatre you will find the High River Motor Hotel; a classic small-town motel that has not only made appearances in Heartland, but also the movie Fubar. If you're up for a drive, Lou’s Season 3 wedding took place at the Millarville Christ Church, a beautiful wooden chapel on Highway 549, just minutes away from the Millarville Farmer’s Market and Race Track, where all rodeo and racing scenes are filmed. The 100+ stall Millarville Market can be found here on Saturdays from June to September. The Racetrack has a Canada Day Race each year, as well as an old-fashioned country fair in August and a Christmas Market in November! It is an exquisite example of early prairie architecture and boasts one of the last free-standing balconies in Canada.
